How to Clean Your Spray Dodger Clears (Without Damaging Them)

Keep your marine clears bright, supple, and salt-free for seasons to come.

Spray dodgers and boat clears are essential for protection and visibility — but only if they’re well looked after. Over time, salt spray, UV rays, and even the wrong cleaning products can cloud or crack your clears. And once damage sets in, there’s no easy fix.

The good news? With the right care, your clears can stay crystal clear for years.

Whether you’re moored in Pittwater or cruising Sydney’s coastline, here’s how to clean your spray dodger clears properly.

1. Rinse First, Always

Before you touch the surface, rinse with fresh, clean water. This removes salt, grit, and airborne particles that could scratch the PVC or acrylic when wiped.

Never wipe clears dry — even with a soft cloth — before rinsing.
Do use a hose or bucket to gently flood away debris.

2. Use a Mild, pH-Neutral Soap

Marine clears aren’t fans of harsh chemicals. Opt for a gentle boat shampoo or dishwashing liquid (like Morning Fresh) diluted in a bucket of warm water.

  • Use your hand or a soft sponge to clean — no brushes or scouring pads

  • Work in straight lines, not circles, to avoid micro-swirls

  • Avoid ammonia, vinegar, or glass cleaners — they cause fogging over time

3. Rinse Thoroughly and Air Dry

After washing, rinse all soap away and let the clears air dry. Avoid using towels or chamois that might leave lint or catch on corners.

Pro tip: Rinse when the boat is cool and shaded — not in direct sunlight.

4. Apply a Plastic Polish or UV Protectant (Optional but Recommended)

To extend the life of your clears, apply a specialist marine clear plastic polish or UV protectant a few times a year.

  • Products like VuPlex, 303 Marine Protectant, or Plexus work well

  • Apply with a clean microfibre cloth

  • Buff gently, again in straight lines

5. Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • No Windex, methylated spirits, or vinegar

  • No paper towels or bathroom cloths

  • Don’t fold your clears — roll them with fabric between layers if storing
